ABPM — Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
ABPM is a test that automatically measures blood pressure over a 24-hour period, day and night.
What the test is for
ABPM gives an accurate, realistic picture of your blood pressure under normal daily and nighttime conditions.
It is recommended for:
- Confirming or ruling out a diagnosis of hypertension
- Detecting "white coat" hypertension (blood pressure elevated only in a clinical setting)
- Assessing the effectiveness of a blood pressure treatment
- Monitoring blood pressure changes during daily activities and sleep
- Better understanding symptoms such as dizziness, headaches or discomfort
How it works, simply put
A cuff is fitted on your arm and connected to a small portable device worn on a belt or shoulder strap. The device automatically takes measurements at regular intervals over 24 hours (every 30 minutes during the day and hourly at night).
Your journey, step by step
We guide you through every step so your test goes smoothly, comfortably and with complete peace of mind.
Before your appointment
- Wear comfortable clothing with loose sleeves.
- Continue your usual activities unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Continue your usual medication unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Avoid getting the device wet for the entire duration of the test.
- Shower before your appointment (you won't be able to wash while wearing the device).
During the test
- Setup takes about 15 minutes, at our Vimont, Laval office.
- You return to your normal activities for 24 hours.
- The cuff inflates automatically several times, day and night, to record your blood pressure.
Getting your results
- At the end of the test, the data is downloaded and sent to the referring physician.
- Interpretation and clinical follow-up by your doctor.
- A copy is available by email or printed on-site.
